The New Moon in Scorpio

The New Moon in Scorpio on October 27, 2019 at 11:37pmEST is an Ancestor Feast.

Feed your dead.

This Moon marks Samhain (sah-wehn) in the Northern Hemisphere. Another summer dims. A harvest ends. This Moon is a vestibule into the darker half of the year. A shrouded passage over hallowed ground.

‘Hallow’ means ‘sacred.’ Hallowe’en, Holy Eve. Celebration of souls and saints, creatures and freaks. Treats, tricks, and true colors.

Here to greet us are the ghouls, the rattling corn husks, the gourds on withering vines. The smell of decay is sweet and clinging. Bodies wane dry and brittle, releasing the spirits within, their powers free to roam.

This Moon awakes spirits in the soil.

A moment of high magic.

Some consider this the start of a spiritual new year.

A mesmerizing Moon of hidden forces, revealed and reveling.

Spirits surround. They make the water we swim in.

Some say the invisible magnetism of spiritual energy is what governs all things manifest. That the energies we cannot see are more powerful than the material world we encounter. That form steeps in spirit, and ensoulment is the basis of matter.

Things still exist without bodies. They swim in the pneuma or find a new host. What’s been repressed will emerge to be purged.

“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” - Carl Jung

Some of what moves us is ancestral. That which is unresolved and passed down. Baggage. Residual trauma. Unfinished business.

What must be relived? What must be carried? What must be buried?

What spirits we cannot see with our naked eye, we can still sense. Our psyches are open to their influence. We can feel them in the cool breeze. The breath of the ancestors; a reminder of how warm we still are on the inside.

We can see them with our inner eye, and hear their voices in our heads. We may even feel their hands at our back, glimpse their memories, or catch scent of meals they once made.

Honor them, remember them, and offer them fuel for their journey.

Light your candles. Pour your goblet of remembrance. Bake your soul cakes. Make your offerings. Call out to those who came before. Invite them to share in the fare.

Many cultures the world over keep lore that feeding the dead is a necessity. Some make altars or host seances. Some keep small houses for their dead, and feed them as part of the daily chores.

Who and what have died to let you live? Speak their names. Introduce yourself as their descendant. “I am Holly, granddaughter of Tula and Stephane from the land now known as Negreet, Louisiana. Great-Granddaughter of…” and so on, for as many as you may know. And if you know none, speak the names of whatever forces have shaped you towards whom you wish to pay respects.

Death is the other side of life.

The Earth is a mass grave. Hallowed ground. The land is dead, which makes it alive.

The Earth is our Ancestor. We are its descendants and inheritors.

Who and what has died here? Where did the body go when the soul departed? Which lives are now imbued with the silent memories of what came before?

In the last year, what has passed? Who has trans-formed, and what did they leave behind?

We are blessed and haunted by the land and its dead. We are of it.

But truly, where is the distinction between life and death? They bleed into each other. A grave is also a birthplace, an evolution.

“Moss doesn’t think about being alive and mountains don’t consider themselves to be dead. Death has no place in the vocabulary of nature. To worry about death is to forget that we, the moss, and the mountains, are all part of an undiminished whole that isn’t measured in breaths.” The CryptoNaturalist

Death brings life into vivid focus. High contrast and saturation. It allows us to be intimate with existence.

This Moon is a thundering whisper: come closer, closer, closer..

..to your own power.

It minds us of our uncanny alchemies. Our capacities for depravity, destruction, and bliss. Our powers to regenerate, rise from ash, and multiply.

It revives the ickies, the spookies, and the cauldron within us that cooks it all. Creating poisons, potions, and tonics. Refining lifetimes. Bubbling, simmering, burning off the dross. Turning lead into gold.

A Moon of merging with shadow. Cells cohere and multiply. Beginning life in the dark.

A bewitching Moon of disrobement.

All ground is hallowed ground, including the terrain of your body.

Undress as the Earth undresses, with attention to shape, hue, and stain.

Notice the colors the trees make as they practice the art of becoming naked. Entrance yourself in their lack of concealment. Baring all, exposing things commonly held within, ‘tween, and ‘neath.

Such honesty is hypnotic.

Remove your cloak. Meld with the elements. This is the primal you.

As garments drop, senses awake. We coalesce with a natural intelligence. Hair prickles. Skin sighs. We listen with our bodies.

If we go deep enough, we might glimpse the keepers of the gates. We may even hear their silent secrets, and be seduced back into our power.

Aries: I transform my attachments.

This New Moon falls in my house of intimacy, inheritance, and shared resources. For the moment, I slow down my public pursuits and tend to the nourishing ties that bind. I plumb my depths and notice what holds me back from deeper relating, so I can overcome those limits. I am feeling committal, like I want to merge and share my essence with another. The relationships I seek now have a longterm, sustainable flavor. Unhidden from each other, “You show me yours and I’ll show you mine.” I embrace changes in my income and assets. May my valuables match my values. I am looking to develop material security that doesn’t come at too high a cost. Earnings that don’t require me to compromise myself or the things I live for. I know the balance is possible; even if I’m the one who sets the lived example.

Taurus: I reset my relationships.

In order to heal, I need to get more free. I welcome thoughts and experiences that further liberate me. The changes that are happening within me require shifts in my relationships. I am awakening more to my own truth and beginning to see how I can free myself from burdens I’ve been taking on for others. I spit out what I need not digest. I lay down what is not mine to carry. I imprint bold new patterns and contracts for my connections. This healing I’m doing is not beyond me - it’s within reach. It isn’t bigger than me - it’s as small and immediate as the cells which make up my body. I know I am made to heal. My relationships are a direct mirror that assist in this process.

Gemini: I dive into wellness.

New Moon, New Lifestyle. I embrace this opportunity to reset my schedule and eliminate distractions. I am making more space for prayer, meditation, imagining, ritual, and idle drifting time. My productivity depends on my capacity to detox, reset, and heal. I empty out, clearing the noise of excessive detail and over-commitment. I take extra projects off my list. I simplify my diet and eliminate patterns of over-consumption; making digestion easy so my life can better flow. I create life rhythms and habits that help me be a clear vessel for spirit. Something new wants to be created through me. I listen deeply for divine inspiration and guidance that is speaking to me in soft voices.

Cancer: I am Creatrix.

This New Moon is an aphrodisiac. I let my heart fall under its amorous spell. I fall all the way in love with myself and my life. I am the muse. My life is a canvas, and I can make it into a glorious, romantic work of art. I think of my favorite paintings as inspiration for my own. I get to choose the colors, the materials, the background music. I choose when and how I bring myself to it and what is born of my efforts. Most of all, I can have FUN. Changes in my relationships and communities inspire me to make myself happier. I choose to enjoy life as much as I can. This Moon is a pleasure rite, a self-seduction ceremony. I stoke my passions and stare in wonder at the alchemies that arise from my own erotic love of life.

Leo: I reside here.

A nesting time, this New Moon marks a new beginning in my house of home and family. I hunker down. I feel my roots and foundation. What are my needs? What makes me feel safe? What’s happening inside me? The changes in my public life require domestic adjustments. We are still working to find new patterns, new rhythms, molding ourselves into shapes that fit the current times. This time of year is particularly moody and nostalgic for me. I steep in memories. I cultivate security and belonging, doing whatever it takes to create a happy, healthy home. Where I live, I call upon the helping spirits of the land. I open my senses to see them more clearly - the other beings with whom I share this homeland. I honor them and ask what they wish for from me, and how we can live well together.

Virgo: I open my mind.

This New Moon brings a potent infusion to my abilities to think, perceive, and communicate. Word, sound, power. I am careful with my words, choosing to ‘spell’ wisely. I consider the importance of every message coming my way. I reach out to neighbors and contacts, participating in brainstorms, debate, and exchange.  The financial obstacles I am experiencing are pushing me to discover how I can be creative. Wherever I feel constricted, I embrace mental expansion, accepting invitations to participate in visionary or journey work. Knowing that if I can travel to various planes of possibility in my own mind, it becomes more likely that I’ll realize more of my potential in the 3D.

Libra: I welcome riches.

This New Moon falls in my house of income and earnings. I rev up my potential to draw in wealth. The truth is, some of my power has been all tied up inside messy enmeshed relationships. Family stuff and ancestral stuff has been impeding my natural magnetism. This Moon illuminates cords that need cutting - breaking bonds that are sucking energy and are no longer to my benefit. I am worthy. I am deserving. I am a natural magnet for wealth. I assert myself to anchor security. I invoke abundance.

Scorpio: New Moon, New Me.

This month offers a revamp for your identity and sense of self. Changes in relationships might poke your squishy places and send you through a loop. Tend to yourself. Who do you want to be for the next 6 months? Mercury retrograde from October 31-November 20 is a look back in time. Revisit photo albums for a trip down memory lane of who you’ve been. How many personas have you inhabited? What’s always remained the same? That’s your essence; the unchanging primordial you is always there beneath it all. How do you want to show yourself to the world now? Shift your image. Let nothing cramp your style. Choose a Halloween costume that reflects your superpowers. Don your cheetah print leggings and your glitter - go as an exaggerated version of YOU.

Sagittarius: I retreat and rest.

This New Moon falls in my house of refuge. If the energy of my daily life feels chaotic and unmanageable, I take shelter. I pull back. The world will not collapse if I let go. Somewhere in my life, I’m seeking closure. I am feeling depleted, and like I need to honor what I give. This Mercury Retrograde period is designed to facilitate endings in my life. I am honest about what I can and cannot sustain. This month may feel like I am pulling from my reserves. So I scale back. I reduce what I withdraw from my own stores. I give myself a break for at least this month, so I can review and restock, and come back renewed next month.

Capricorn: I join my allies.

Sometimes the most productive thing I can do is set my sights on something other than what I am trying to accomplish. At this point, my old habits of achievement will simply get in my own way. I stop trying to push forward to get ahead. I press pause on my goals. I shift my sights, instead, to play. At this moment, play is more meaningful - and more effective - than work. My joy is more important than any achievement. My joy brings me into the moment. Joy makes a life worth living. Who do I become when I play? Who do I want to play with? This New Moon is perfect weather for joining a coven, assemble a book club, or connect in a circle of like-hearted kindreds.

Aquarius: I ascend.

This New Moon invites a look at my #goals. My calling, my impact, and my vocation are up for revision. Is there something I’ve always wanted to do that has been left incomplete? Now’s the time to get clear of the fears that have held me back from making that a primary pursuit. There is a powerful influence that wants to move through me and ripple out to the wider world. I am a creator of culture. Changes in my home and family life are bringing clearer focus to my status and public life. I feel a wandering in me.. The path forward isn’t entirely clear as of yet. That’s okay. I simply go the way that feels like a higher elevation - a breath of fresh air - a room with a view.

This is a wandering moon. I embrace my wanderlust, foster my restless spirit. I know it is leading me towards synchronicity. I trust these travels. I trust these roving feet, these winding roads. They are taking me higher, into realms of meaning-making that keep me going. I am gathering truths that act as a compass on my life journey. I am looking for Gxd. Seeking new horizons; worlds I can place my faith in. Worlds where radical ideas and new modes of thought are integrated with wisdom. Y’all can find me here; continuously learning and re-learning. Weaving together the threads of existence.
